The good place finale12/31/2022 I know it's hard to grasp and I didn't explain it that well either but I suggest you look into the idea of letting go of the material world to obtain a better spiritual understanding. They had full trust not only within themselves but also the cosmos. ALSO note that they were unaware of what was going to happen once they went through that door. With its series finale, The Good Place chose not to overstay its welcome, ending gently with a 90-minute conclusion that held no surprises except, maybe, how disappointing fulfillment can be. So when they went through the door, it was a realization on their part that they are leaving their material body to now experience a spiritual bond with the universe itself. The idea that humans focus too much on materialism over their spiritual self - which in this case, the people in the good place OVERTIME learned to let go of all the material possessions in their life, including their relationships, the comfort of having any MATERIAL things handed to you, and even their own bodies. I think the writers were influenced from certain aspects laid out in Hinduism and Buddhism. However, I don't think the writers were trying to convey it as suicide. I understand that whether it's positive or negative suicide is suicide. It’s mental gymnastics to try and not think about how horrible the ending of their favourite show is. It was a brilliant idea to in the end let them get to good place only to realize the eternity of bliss ended up being numbing and unbearable for the human soul. There is no answer here or anywhere else in the community that can defend this. The way the series ended wasn't how I expected but I ended up loving it. That’s pretty horrifying that, if that hadn’t happened, she’d have gone into the cosmic woodchipper of her own volition, and everyone would have said “oh she said she definitely felt ready, who are we to argue with that?” but she changes her mind after someone else comes up with an idea of something she could do. Tahani is proof in the series itself that the Door is a flawed concept, since she is ready to go and throws her going away party. I would go further and say that Chidi, despite it coming from good intentions, is unequivocally the worst person in existence for all of time - it’s not even close - for essentially being that person who gives a suicidal person a gun specifically for the purpose or ending it all - except Chidi gave it to the entire human race, past and present and future, and helped engineer the afterlife into a place where people would eventually feel compelled to use it. I want to point out (and my final comment there outlines this) that Tahani is proof in the episode itself that the Door-Suicide is a monumentally bad decision. ![]() It’s literally just discussion about the philosophy of the show, you know the whole purpose? Can’t believe this thread was downvoted to below 0 - it’s not abusive, it’s not low-effort or a shitpost. I totally agree, I did my write-up here about it.
